Is Your Organization Too complex To Secure?Be deliberate about simplicity and simplification Complex organizations can lead to a lack of communication and coordination between departments, which can result in severe cybersecurity and privacy issues. In Malaysia, 75% of respondents feel that their companies are overly complex, leading to unnecessary risks to their organization's cybersecurity and privacy. According to the survey, technology infrastructure, multi-vendor environments, and data infrastructure are the most unnecessarily complex areas. As organizations become more complex, executives are struggling to understand operational processes, leading to growing concerns about cyber and privacy risks. Malaysian respondents are particularly concerned about data and technology infrastructure risks, followed by multi-vendor environments, such as cloud environments. The costs of complexity Both global and Malaysian respondents agree that financial losses are the most significant consequence of successful data breaches or cyber-attacks. However, larger Malaysian organizations face the additional challenge of balancing the need to keep up with the latest cyber trends while reducing operational complexity to sustain long-term growth. Implementing new technologies can be challenging due to their complexity, which leads to business leaders questioning the return on investment compared to the costs. The move to simplification Despite being aware of the risks associated with complexity, only 32% of Malaysian respondents have taken steps to streamline their operations, and a third have either not done anything or are just starting. However, there is a growing trend towards simplification, which requires a shift in company culture and viewpoints. The benefits of streamlining are significant, and globally, companies that have streamlined operations are 5x more likely to have the best cybersecurity outcomes over the past two years. In Malaysia, there is a similar trend toward streamlining operations. Many local organizations have already implemented an integrated data governance framework, consolidated technology vendors, and created an integrated dashboard for key metrics. Companies are seeking to reduce their reliance on manual processes that are prone to human error, with 26% of respondents having removed redundancies in processes and 16% transitioning to more automated processes. CISOs and CIOs are now more focused on evaluating tech investments beyond following trends or pursuing the latest products from tech vendors. Cloud security is a top investment priority for Malaysian organizations, with 48% having implemented it at scale. However, only 6% are currently reaping the benefits of their investments, while 45% are still planning or just starting. To simplify cybersecurity, a strong tone from leadership is necessary to communicate the importance of security.
